The Day That Was April 14th 2010!

Where do I begin!
For most people, the start of the week is either Sunday or Monday (my wife have had many rumbles over this fact) but for UK fans it started on Wednesday. April 14th of 2010 will go down in my own personal history as one of my favorite sports days of all time!
As I woke up that morning and was showering, shaving, doing all the morning rituals, all I could think about is the impending letters of intent coming from Mr. Brandon Knight and Mr. Michael Gilchrist. All the rumors said it was going to happen but I nervously waited to hear the news and waited on it to become official. I was like a kid on Christmas Eve. I had tried to explain for the last few days how epic this was to my wife. It of course fell on deaf ears but how many women get excited over University of Kentucky basketball six months before the season....I think I'll give her a pass on that.
Anyway as all this ran through my mind and I stepped out of the shower, I heard on ESPN2 there was some breaking news in the NFL! What could it be? Had Big Ben showed it's ugly face again in a college bar.....pun intended! No the news was that Brandon Marshall was on a plane and headed to Miami to become a part of the Miami Dolphins!?!?
My team....the Miami Dolphins....doing something they should have done in the offseason? You can imagine my excitement seeing as how since Dan Marino retired there were only a handfull of times I remember the Dolphins actually doing what they should have done. All offseason long all I could think about is the Dolphins finally getting a top tier WR. I watched Anquan Boldin become a Raven, I watched Santonio Holmes become a part of the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets! (That was for you Mr. Thompson) And began to think to myself oh well there's always next year. That phrase becomes common place after being a Cubs fan all your life. But here they were, led by the genius that is Bill Parcells, my team finally getting the guy they needed to get! When was the last time my day started this good?
As the day went on I tried to be productive....that didn't happen. My boss and I spent most of the day searching for ways we could watch the coverage of the possible Brandon Knight/Michael Gilchrist signings. We killed some time watching the Cubs win! Cubs Win! Oh no the Cubs win and the Dolphins get Brandon Marshall....things are going way to good at this point in the day. Still I had a good feeling.
It was a little after 4 and all of the Big Blue Nation watched as Brandon Knight, our next star, fumbled to pull a hat out of a bag.....literally.....and there it was! The number one overall prospect again is going to be a University of Kentucky Wildcat! There was a huge sigh of relief all over the commonwealth. For those of you that don't live and breath UK basketball and recruiting news let me assure you, Mr. Knight is legit. He is the best poing guard of this recruiting class, no matter what the talking heads at ESPN might tell you and he is going to be what makes this team go. The biggest difference in him and Jimmy Wall is he doesn't quite have the speed of Wall but he is definately a better outside shooter.
Brandon Knight is the next lottery pick of the Calipari Regime! Something to get more excited about is the fact that he may not be a "one and done" like so many have labeled him. He will start at the University of Kentucky in the fall with one year of college credits and the rumor is that he wants to graduate! If we get him like we got Patterson for 3 years, you may see at least an 8th banner, if not 9 hanging from Rupp by 2012.
So the day is winding down and we have gotten our next future NBA lottery pick coming to UK. How long would we have to wait til our next lottery pick commited....about 90 minutes. That's right folks, Michael Gilchrist commits to the University of Kentucky right before the 6 o clock hour. For those of you that don't know alot about Mr. Gilchrist please youtube him. This kid will be enlisting in the Big Blue Army in 2011. While he is only a junior, many recruiting experts say he is the best recruit in high school, regardless of class. He will be playing the 3 spot when he gets here and will put up huge numbers and many think he will be an unstoppable force!
These are the first two pieces of what could be huge recruiting class for the Wildcats. Couple that with the Dolphins signing Brandon Knight, the Cubs winning and for me it became one of the greatest sports days in recent memory. I'll be back a little later with more news on these two recruits, our latest recruit Doron Lamb and who I believe UK lands this week. I have a feeling its going to be another good week!
